Touchpoint FAQs for PayPal EMV and ApplePay
- 1) Why won’t my EMV device pair with the iPad?
- First change the register settings in the Touchpoint Web Admin to define PayPal EMV as the swiper type for the register
- Charge the EMV swiper completely
- Turn off other EMV swipers that are close to the iPad
- In iPad Settings turn bluetooth off and on again - 2) What are the loyalty limitations with ApplePay or use NFC?
- ApplePay and NFC do not allow automatic sign-in to loyalty and cannot be “connected” to a loyalty account. When customers pay with ApplePay or NFC they will need to tap in their phone number or scan their loyalty QR code
- 3) Does the EMV reader need to be charged?
- YES! The EMV readers, like iPads, should be charged nightly. We recommend adding this to your nightly closing process. -
4) Do I need to update my payment credentials in the TP Web Admin? - - No. Your existing PayPal credentials will work with the new readers.
- 5) What should I do with my old triangle readers?
- Keep them around! Just remember that if you need to use a triangle reader you will need to go into the TP Web Admin and define the PayPal triangle was the swiper type - 6) Which case works with the EMV readers?
- Apple recently released a new iPad form factor so there is still a lag as case manufacturers catch-up. We recommend using the chip and tap with charging base at your counter and for LineBusters try the Armor-X shockproof case that allows you to adhere the EMV reader to the back.
7) Why are payments failing when the store is offline?
- All EMV readers require an internet connection in order to work. This does mean that if the system is offline they will not work.
Touchpoint is offering a 4G modem backup package with the Local Clouds. What this will do is automatically switch to the backup modem when your ISP is offline. At that point the bluetooth readers will continue to function and you will still have internet access.
If you are interested in the 4G backup packages let us know (support@touchpoint and we can provide some details on them for you!

2. PayPal-EMV-Options
2.1 EMV reader from the PayPal store
Both have little adhesive cases for mobile use, but the one with the stand works great for counter usage and can be plugged in continually.
Just a heads up that Apple Pay is available, but people will have to enter their mobile number to get their points.
For this reason, the cheaper one is just as recommendable for mobile. But for counter usage the charging stand is quite nice.
2.2 Magnet USB adaptors for charging
Unlike readers in a headphone jack, EMV readers need to be charged. We recommend magnetic USB adaptors for charging the readers.
Why fumble with a tiny micro USB slot and try to guess if it's up or down? These magnetic adaptors from Digital Ant are wonderful.

2.3 iPad Cases for Mobile
There are more and more cases available for the newest 7th generation 10.2'' iPads.
These ones from Armor-X are affordable, have flat backs to affix either reader, and are available with handles and lanyards.

2.4 Very High Bond Tape (optional)

And if you are the slightest bit concerned and think adhesive might not being strong enough to attach the reader case to the iPad case, get some 3M Very High Bond tape.
The bond continues to get stronger and stronger over time, to the point that we broke open a triangle reader trying to remove it. Very High Bond indeed...
